Event commemorates federal grant funding exterior restoration project at Georgetown Steam Plant

Updated: 1 day ago

Seattle City Light invites community members on Sat. Feb. 1 to the Georgetown Steam Plant to celebrate an exterior restoration project funded in part by the National Park Service.

If you've never visited the Georgetown Steam Plant, a recent Gazette visit summarizes the experience well. At 118 years old, the Steam Plant was the first reinforced concrete structure built on the west coast, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984. For years, it needed thorough restoration of its exterior, a project considered by masonry expert John Lambert a "10 out of 10" difficulty.

Following an initial $100,000 grant from 4Culture used to restore the structure's south elevation, the National Park Service in 2018 awarded City Light a $500,000 Save America's Treasures grant, which City Light Sr. Community Program Developer Julianna Ross noted is very prestigious and challenging to win.

The federal dollars, while only sufficient to strip the building's exterior, helped City Light secure an additional $1.7 million grant from the Washington State Heritage Capital fund. Funds were used to install new windows and doors (a five-year process) and a new roof (an 18-month process).

The Feb. 1 event recognizes the National Park Service for its involvement and support. Details are below:
