Hiphop Grooves to Get You Through the Big Dark

Afternoon sunsets, wet leaves… it’s officially PNW gloom season, and I want to share the best coping mechanism I know of (besides relocating to Mexico). It’s a $15 mental and physical health investment right here on Fourth Ave South: Dance Grooves adult hiphop class with Jeffie Lou Jackson of D&G Dance Company.
Every Monday at 6:30 pm, Jeffie Lou teaches a fresh hiphop fusion choreography to dancers of varying abilities in a large second-floor dance space. We learn the steps together, in 8-count chunks, and then run them in sequence for a minute-long routine. Once the room is mostly in synch, we repeat the dance to progressively faster songs until everyone is sweating and panting and laughing. Then we cool down.
The hour goes so fast—especially when I compare it to an hour-long running or stationary bike session—and can deliver a days’ worth of steps. The music is loud and good, the dancers are dedicated but welcoming, and I’ve never left class not feeling at least 2X better.
Jeffie Lou’s hiphop class happens 6:30-7:30 pm on Mondays at 5300 Fourth Ave S in the old Magnum Printing building. Drop-ins are welcome ($15) and you can buy a 10-class pass for $120. See you there!
