SDOT breaks ground on pedestrian + cycling infrastructure project connecting Georgetown to South Park

'Tis the season for improvements to non-vehicle infrastructure in Georgetown! On Monday, November 18, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) broke ground on the Georgetown to South Park Connection project.

The effort, which creates a walking and biking connection between Georgetown and South Park, is the latest portion of a system of north-south bike trails between Seattle and South King County that aim to increase cyclist safety while connecting the Georgetown and South Park communities to each other and to the area's public transportation network. The Gazette recently reported on the Georgetown to Downtown Safety Project, which kicked off in October.

This newest leg begins on S Bailey and 13th Ave S and proceeds south on Ellis Ave S via a sidewalk-level shared walking and biking path. Jogging east on S. Myrtle, the trail will move through the Georgetown Flume property (an area between the Aero Motel and the Boeing campus, which will be developed into a dog park) and then proceed down E Marginal Way S, connecting to the South Park Bridge via post-protected bike lanes. Improvements on the route include new and repaved sidewalks, one-way bike lanes, walking and biking paths, new paint and posts in roadways, and signage.

SDOT is hosting a public kick-off celebration in Georgetown to commemorate this milestone. Details below:
